Just seems odd and out of place, but anyway. That they rely almost solely on the Xenonauts strikes me as underestimating both the countries own perceived authority over the Xenonauts, since they're funding you, but also the greed of the governments for tech advantage over each other, let alone the Alien threat. Not only does airstriking the UFO landings/crashes seem like overkill in most cases, but wouldn't most of, if not all, of the countries funding the Xenonauts want the tech improvements and alien tech itself from the wrecks?

Given that A: They're aliens, and we know SFA about them, and B: They clearly have far more advanced tech than we do, you'd think that ground assaults would be preferred to airstriking them, since you kinda need to examine their shit to close the technological gap, and understand better how to kill them. The supposed goal of the Xenonaut organisation being defense against the alien threat would imply actually defending locations like cities or eliminating potential threats of landed or crashed UFO's. The problem with it is that it's not only disingenuous, and counter-intuitive, but also counter-productive? Now I won't claim to be a tactical genius, but a lot of problems i run into, especially with Breach and Clear assaults on rooms, is simply down to the soldiers i have on hand either Not having enough TU's to get in, take position and cover others moving up, or, if i take time to set up, i get aliens popping doors a turn before I move, and either shooting people in the face, or nading them, since i'm grouping near doors to push in.īleh, now i'm rambling, so i'll fuck off for a bit and expand if necessary on replies.Įdit: still don't like formatting on Reddit. Just sat outta sight in a corner and killed two people, one in the doorway, one outside, then hid in a different corner. Had someone move up and nail one, and the other seemed to have teleported out. Had one situation of LoS exploiting on a base defense that had two aliens teleport into a small room in opposite corners.

While i understand that Xenonauts in general is going to be more of a meatgrinder than the Xcom series ever has been, at least recently, the ground AI seems designed around making even the slightest misstep or miscalculation cost you half your force or more. Now, for the most part, i have little issue with how Ground combat works, with certain races having better LoS range, various effective weapon ranges and combat distance preferences.īut one of the main issues i DO have with ground combat, is that for the most part, unless you get incredibly lucky, or manage to somehow space your guys out perfectly, you're losing at least 1/3 of your force if you're attacking a UFO, if not more, especially with the early Cruiser missions, or the Carriers.

The vast majority, however, are the result of the Ground combat aspect of Xenonauts.Ī: the AI knows and exploits your LoS limitations, particularly around corners and when in cover on opposite sides of the same wall,ī: the AI's inherent preference for nade spam when you have either a Shield wielder, or more than one soldier within range of a grenade,Ĭ: the AI's exploitation of certain LoS issues with roofing, UFO walls/ceiling, orĭ: the fact that Xenonaut soldiers have ridiculously low health pools in general, compared to almost any Alien race, and that your armour often does little for your survivability until the Buzzard and Predator sets.Į: that due to the above problems, most soldiers won't get to or above Captain, which winds up causing problems later as you can't get experienced squads. Most times i've done campaigns in Xenonauts, i've given up completely on at one point or another, for various reasons.Īt least one of those has been stupid mistakes or decisions which crippled me later. Is nice, only real complaint is it doesn't work with Better Foxtrots, but that's pretty minor. Graphics: 512 MB DirectX 9.Preface: Love the game, and the World map/manual air combat shit works really well.Īlso only recently swapped to the CE version.Xenonauts includes and expands upon the key features of the original X-Com games, including: After five years of development, including a successful Kickstarter campaign in June 2012 and more than a year on Steam Early Access, Goldhawk Interactive finally released Xenonauts on Steam on June 16, 2014. It features all of the same major systems and gameplay with a few careful enhancements.
